Today, the Common Loon remains a threatened species in Michigan. While loons continue to grace many of our lakes, they face increasing challenges from habitat loss, shoreline development, boat disturbance, fishing tackle, contaminants, and changing environmental conditions. Protecting loons begins with understanding where they are, how many remain, and whether they are successfully raising young.
That is why we are asking for your help!
On Saturday, July 18, the Michigan Loon Preservation Association will conduct its First Michigan Loon Count.
This effort will create an important statewide snapshot of Michigan’s loon population. The information you collect will help us better understand population trends, identify conservation priorities, and strengthen our efforts to protect loons and the lakes they call home.
Participating is simple:

Register at link below. On the day of the event you will get a text or email with a link to file your report.

On July 18, count and record the number of loons observed on your lake.

Submit your observations through our reporting system.
